TL;DR. Yes. The ChatGPT plan you already have can write a whole app, front end and back end. What it can't give you on its own is somewhere for that app to run: a public address, a database that keeps its data, sign-in for your users, and jobs that run while nobody is chatting. Connect a hosting app to ChatGPT and it can create the project, write the files and put the app live in the same conversation, with no second AI subscription and no build credits. On Hatchable that works on any ChatGPT plan, including free, and hosting starts at $0. (Updated October 2026.)
What ChatGPT can already do
ChatGPT is a capable programmer. Ask it for a habit tracker, a booking page or a small CRM and it will produce working HTML, JavaScript, SQL and server code, explain it, and fix it when you paste back an error. In canvas it can also show you a preview of the page as it writes it.
That is most of the work, and you are already paying for it (or using the free tier). The part that's missing isn't intelligence; it's infrastructure.
What an app needs besides code
A preview in a chat window is a picture of an app. To be something other people can use, the same code needs:
- A public web address that works for anyone, on any device, without your ChatGPT account.
- A database so a signup, an order or a note is still there tomorrow. Browser storage only lives on one device and disappears when it's cleared.
- Sign-in for your users, if the app has anything private in it.
- A server side for the parts that must not run in the browser: secret keys, payments, sending email.
- Scheduled jobs for reminders, digests and anything that should happen on its own.
None of these are things a chat assistant provides by itself. They're what a host provides.
Three ways to get from ChatGPT's code to a live app
| Route | How it works | Good for | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| Copy and paste to a host | ChatGPT writes the files; you create an account somewhere, upload them, set up a database and wire in the keys yourself | Developers who already have hosting they like | Every change means another round of copy, paste and redeploy, and the database and sign-in are yours to set up |
| A separate AI app builder | You move the project into a builder that has its own built-in AI | People who want one product with zero setup | These tools typically meter their AI with credits or message allowances, so you're often paying for a second AI on top of ChatGPT |
| Connect a hosting app to ChatGPT | ChatGPT calls the host's tools directly: create a project, write files, run SQL, deploy | Anyone who wants to stay in ChatGPT | A one-time connect step, and ChatGPT's own usage limits still apply |

Walkthrough: build and launch from one ChatGPT chat
-
Connect Hatchable
Open Hatchable in the ChatGPT app directory and click Connect. ChatGPT sends you to hatchable.com to approve; approving creates your free account. There is no key to copy and no URL to paste. Step-by-step screenshots are in connect Hatchable to ChatGPT.
-
Describe the app
Start a new chat and be concrete about who uses it and what it stores: "Build a booking page for my dog-walking business. Clients pick a time slot and leave their name and email, I get an admin page listing the bookings, and it emails me when someone books. Put it live on Hatchable."
-
Approve the steps
ChatGPT creates the project, writes the files in small batches, adds the database tables and deploys. Actions that change things ask for your OK by default; you can allow them for the rest of the conversation.
-
Open the link
It comes back with a live
your-app.hatchable.siteaddress. Open it on your phone, make a test booking, then check the admin page. -
Keep going in the same chat
"Add a cancel link to the confirmation email" or "block out Sundays" is another message, not another tool. Each deploy keeps a history, so a change you don't like can be rolled back.
Every Hatchable project starts with its own Postgres database, sign-in for the app's users, email sending, scheduled jobs and file storage, so the follow-up requests don't need new services.
What it costs
- The AI: whatever ChatGPT plan you already have. Listed apps like Hatchable connect on any plan, free included (as of August 2026). Heavier building is smoother on a paid plan simply because ChatGPT's own message limits are higher there.
- The hosting: Hatchable's free plan is $0 with unlimited private projects and one app published to the open web, no card. Builder is $12 a month for unlimited published apps and custom domains.
- No credits. Hatchable doesn't sell AI, so there's no allowance that runs out while you iterate. ChatGPT does the thinking on the plan you already pay for.
Honest limits
- ChatGPT's limits still apply. If you hit your plan's message cap mid-build, you wait or switch models, same as any other ChatGPT task. Your project and its data are unaffected.
- Big apps take several turns. A full app is many files. Building it in steps (data first, then pages, then email) works better than one enormous request.
- Be specific about data. "Store bookings with a name, email and time slot" gets you a better database than "save the info".
- You review what goes live. ChatGPT is fast, not infallible. Click through the app before you share the link.
Your ChatGPT plan is enough. Add the hosting.
Connect Hatchable once and ChatGPT can put what it builds live, with a database and sign-in included. Free plan, no card.
Get started free →Frequently asked questions
Can I build an app with the free version of ChatGPT?
Yes. ChatGPT free can write the code, and listed apps such as Hatchable connect on free accounts as of August 2026. You will hit message limits sooner than on a paid plan, so build in smaller steps.
Do I need ChatGPT Plus to build an app?
No, but it helps for longer builds because Plus allows more messages and stronger models. The hosting side does not change with your ChatGPT plan.
Is a canvas preview the same as a live app?
No. A preview only exists inside your conversation. A live app has a public address anyone can open, plus a database that keeps its data between visits.
Do I have to know how to code?
No. You describe the app and review the result. Knowing a little helps you ask for precise changes, but ChatGPT writes and deploys the code.
Who owns the app ChatGPT builds?
You do. On Hatchable the project is standard JavaScript, HTML and Postgres, and you can export the code and data from the console.
